How to prepare for blood tests

Should I be fasting?
For certain blood tests, it is required that you are fasting. Ask the doctor, who gives you the referral for the blood test, if you are in doubt.

What does "fasting" mean?
You must not eat or drink anything other than water after 10 pm the night before the blood tests are to be taken.
You can drink 1-2 glasses of water.
You must not smoke 2 hours before the blood tests are to be taken.
Necessary medication should be taken as usual, but it is preferable to take the blood tests beforehand.

Results of samples and tests
Test results can be obtained by contacting your own doctor.
The response time for blood tests and other examinations varies – from hours to days and weeks.

Blood test on children
Our aim is that the child has a positive experience when coming to the hospital. If the child is very anxious, parents/guardians should still inform the child in advance about what will happen. When you arrive, it is also helpful for us to know what the child is thinking, so that we can meet the child where they are mentally.

The child can receive local anesthesia (EMLA patch/cream) on the arm. The patch/cream makes the skin numb, so the child does not feel the needle. The patch/cream can be purchased at the pharmacy (Apotekið). Children 0-2 months old can have a maximum of 1 patch, i.e., only on one of the arms, and children 3-11 months old can have a maximum of 2 patches. It is important to follow the user instructions that come with the package.

Blood donation

At the three hospitals, approximately 2,200 blood donors are registered. This is about 4½ percent of the Faroese population. Together, they donate blood approximately 2,200 times a year.
